This policy explains what information jfxAudio ("we", "us") collects when you use jfxaudio.com (the "Site"), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. jfxAudio is operated from Virginia, United States.
The short version
- You can use the fretboard, chords, circle of fifths and articles without an account.
- If you create an account, we store your email, optional name, preferences and favorite chords so the Site works for you.
- The Site is free and supported by ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show and measure ads, and we use Google Analytics to see how the Site is used.
- We don't sell your information for money. You can change your cookie and ad choices at any time from Your choices below.

Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your email address, a password (stored only as a one-way hash), and optionally your first and last name.
- Preferences and saved items: your light or dark theme setting and the chords you save as favorites.
- Messages: your name, email address and message when you use the contact form.
Information from Google when you sign in with Google
If you choose "Continue with Google", Google shares your name, email address, profile picture and Google account ID with us. We request only basic profile and email access (the openid, email and profile scopes) and nothing else from your Google account. We use this information only to create your jfxAudio account and sign you in. See Google user data below.
Information collected automatically
- Usage and device information: pages you visit, how you use the tools, the site that referred you, your browser, device type, operating system, approximate location derived from your IP address, and the date and time of your visit. Google Analytics and Google's advertising services collect this using cookies and similar technologies.
- Server logs: our servers record your IP address, browser and the pages requested, to keep the Site secure and running.
How we use information
- To provide the Site, create and manage your account, sign you in, and save your preferences and favorites.
- To respond to your messages and send account emails such as password resets.
- To understand how the Site is used and improve it.
- To show ads that keep the Site free, and to measure how those ads perform.
- To keep the Site secure, prevent abuse, and fix problems.
- To comply with the law and enforce our Terms and Conditions.
If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, our legal bases are: performing our agreement with you (your account and its features); our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving the Site; and your consent for analytics and advertising cookies, which you can withdraw at any time.
Advertising
We use Google AdSense to show ads on the Site.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this Site and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this Site and/or other sites on the Internet.

If you opt out of personalized ads, you'll still see ads, but they won't be based on your browsing.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site, for example which pages are popular and how people find us. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect usage and device information as described above. We don't use it to identify you personally. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by declining analytics cookies in our cookie settings.

Google and its partners may change the exact names of their cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but parts of the Site, such as staying signed in, won't work without the essential ones.
Your choices
- Cookie and ad consent: if you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we ask for your consent before using analytics and advertising cookies, using a consent tool provided by Google. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time:
- Do Not Sell or Share (US): we don't sell personal information for money. However, letting Google and its partners use advertising cookies for personalized ads may count as "selling" or "sharing" personal information, or "targeted advertising", under some US state laws, including those of California and Virginia. Where those laws apply, you can opt out with the Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link on the Site.
- Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of personalized advertising.
- Google sign-in: you can remove jfxAudio's access to your Google account at any time in your Google account settings.
How we share information
We share information only as follows:
- Service providers that run the Site for us: hosting and storage (Amazon Web Services), email delivery for account and contact emails, and Google for sign-in, analytics and advertising. They may use the information only to provide their services, except Google, which uses advertising and analytics data as described in its own policies.
- Advertising partners, as described in Advertising.
- Legal reasons: if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of jfxAudio, our users or others.
- Business transfers: if jfxAudio is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
Google user data
We use information received from Google sign-in only to create your account, sign you in and show your name on your account. We don't use it for advertising, don't sell it, and don't share it with anyone except as needed to run the Site or comply with the law.
jfxAudio's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How long we keep information
- Account information is kept until you delete your account. Sign-in sessions expire after 30 days.
- Contact messages are kept as long as needed to respond and for our records.
- Server logs are kept for a limited time for security and troubleshooting.
- Analytics and advertising data is kept by Google according to its retention settings and policies.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, receive a copy in a portable format, object to or restrict certain uses, withdraw consent, and opt out of targeted advertising or the sale or sharing of your information. These rights include those under the GDPR and UK GDPR and under US state laws such as Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act and California's Consumer Privacy Act.
You can update your details, disconnect Google or delete your account at any time in My Account. For any other request, email support@jfxaudio.com from the email address on your account. We'll respond within the time required by law, usually within 30 days, and may need to verify your identity first. We won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.
If we decline your request, you can appeal by replying to our response with "Appeal" in the subject line. We'll respond to appeals within 60 days. If you're not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general or, in Europe and the UK, your local data protection authority.
International transfers
jfxAudio is based in the United States, and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Security
We protect your information with measures such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords and restricted access to our systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
Children
The Site isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll change the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes we'll give more prominent notice on the Site.
